The InZen project, shortened from Industrial Zen, was a collaborative design effort between VaST architecture and Terra Firma Construction. Having worked with this client before, we knew what his basic space planning requirements would be which allowed us to focus more on the overall design concept. The form of the building was influenced mostly by the the long and narrow lot and the size requirements set by the client. Following the design concept the exterior is clad with simple durable materials like metal and stucco, but also has reclaimed wood to add warmth and character. Much of the buildings design revolved around issues of energy efficiency. The South elevation has sufficient glazing to passively heat the home on cold sunny days, while strategically placed overhangs keep the home cool during the summer. The polished concrete floors not only add to the aesthetic but temper the buildings climate throughout the year. A green roof that is accessible from both the outside and interior has multiple benefits. It provides more outdoor space with beautiful views of the mountains, while adding insulation, and mediating storm runoff. Much attention was given to the interior finishes so that they will be safe, durable to create a healthy home that will last for generations. |
