Artist Julie Maren and her physicist husband, Derek vanWestrum, were ready to trade in their 800 SF, 1950s home for something a little more user-friendly and a lot more sleek. The initial plan to put an addition on their existing home was squelched when the soils report turned up expansive soils. It was then more practical to take down the existing structure and start from scratch with a sturdy foundation on piers.
The plan includes two-bedrooms and an office. The main floor features an open-floor plan with very high ceilings and plenty of space to display art. The oversize garage provides bike, motorcycle and tool storage for Derek. The room above the garage is currently used as a short-term rental.
